Becca's Fab Five Nature Inspired Gifts.. for Outdoorsy Folks!
My family spends a ton of time in the outdoors- Hiking, Camping, Playing in the woods. We love the outdoors and we are always looking for more ways to really engage our family in a deeper Nature Connection. Let’s be honest, though, that we are also always looking for ways to make these activities flow more smoothly. If you know a family that loves the outdoors, these suggestions just might come in handy!
Becca’s Fab Five Nature Inspired Gifts
For Little Kids (2-6 yrs)- My favorite book for exploring the woods is A Walk Through the Woods-. What a beautiful book! Your kids will love exploring the pictures, practicing Fox Feet and Deer Ears, and whispering with the trees. Pair it with some Jumbo Magnifying Glasses and Bug Catchers. It is a guaranteed hit!
For Young Kids (5-10 yrs)- What kids doesn’t love a pocket knife? The Opinel “My First Pocket Knife” has a rounded tip for added safety and a mechanism to lock it open or closed. This is the Pocket knife we recommend at Deep Roots Nature School as our first pocket knife. The level 2 knife is the Opinel Junior which features the same locking mechanism but has a more pointed end (though still not a sharp point). Both of these knots come in natural wood or colored handles. Paired with the Klutz Book of Knots, this gift will inspire any kid to work on their outdoors skills!
For kids 10 yrs and older- The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling is absolutely magnificent. A nature Journal is a wonderful way for young people to record all the things they discover and to begin to take ownership of their outdoor experiences. A sketchpad and some watercolor pencils would go great with this guide!
For Teens: Hammocks are all the rage with the teens. A lightweight Camping Hammock stores in a backpack and goes up anywhere easily. We see young people with these hammocks everywhere we hike. It’s a simple way to get outside and get in some relaxation with friends.
For Parents: As a parent, you just HAVE to accept that you will be carrying a lot of stuff when you head into the outdoors. I like these lightweight Collapsible Silicone Water Bottles because they are reusable, they get smaller as you go, they are easy to store in your car or pack for impromptu outings, and they don’t weigh as much as stainless steel (those suckers are heavy)! A set for the whole family is a great gift! You might put them inside a nice lightweight Hiking Pack with a set of Outdoors Bingo to inspire a family you love to get outside more!
BONUS GIFT IDEA: After a great hike, we love to come home and check out interesting finds in our Explanatorium. The pictures in this thick reference (which you can usually get for under $30) are unbelievable and the information is in easy to digest chunks.
A little time in the Great Outdoors in good for everybody… and it never hurts to have some great gadgets to make it even MORE enjoyable!
