The Business of YOU- How to best serve the most important community!
Sometimes I wonder if all the December festivities are a masochistic approach to self evaluation. A new year is just around the corner and with that new year arrives a “clean slate” of sorts. January is the perfect opportunity to make changes! Coming off a month of complete indulgence and materialism, you’re likely to take a grim view of yourself and feel compelled to overhaul your very existence.
Yes. I am talking about the New Year’s Resolution.
Don’t you roll your eyes and click away. Deep down, even if you aren’t into resolutions, I know that you are eyeing some things you’d like to change in your life. I am, too.
I’m a BIG FAN of the New Year’s Resolution.
Heck, if you aren’t taking a minute to look over the last year and assess what you want to go differently, you are FAILING AT THE BUSINESS OF YOU! Every successful business in the world takes some time to crunch the numbers, assess the trajectory, and question the culture. You and me… we should, too. The trajectory of your life right now came to be because of millions of tiny little decisions that either worked for you or against you. The goal is to have more that are working for you. That’s how you move in the right direction. Taking an eagle’s eye view of what’s going on let’s you see that while every decision doesn’t have to be perfect, every decision DOES matter! Set aside some time this month- before you feel like a big fat turd and possibly with your whole family- to consider where to focus your work.
Create focused goals.
We all want to “get healthier” or “save money” or “eat better.” You deserve a better goal than that, though. You know, one that has actual benchmarks and an action plan. You have to know where to aim to hit the bullseye. Break these big goals down into something achievable that can actually be reached.
I will incorporate some sort of exercise into 5 days of every week.
I will try one new healthy recipe each week to build my kitchen skills.
I will set aside $10 every single week.
Set a goal that relies on you, and you alone, to accomplish. Nothing big, nothing outlandish. Keep it doable and enjoy the fruits of your labor as they build into some REAL change.
Fall in love with the process.
“When you take care of the process, the end results will take care of themselves.”
Turning your attention away from the actual goal and instead focusing on the tiny details creates a step by step appreciation for the outcome. It also drives momentum with a million little successes and a million little learning opportunities along the way. Regardless of the goal, the “getting there” is the real magic. The process is full of pitfalls and ugly moments- bad workouts, failed outings with your family, party food all around you, disastrous homemade dinners. I can’t encourage you enough to become passionate about those million little details, tiny successes, pitfalls and ugly moments. Dive into the moments that are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! Rest in those and let the big picture come together beautifully on its own.
The best time to do it is RIGHT NOW.
Do it this week. Schedule some time with yourself or your significant other to talk through your current life. Where are you missing the mark? Where can you make a little shift towards a big vision? Write them down. Now, go enjoy the rest of your Holidays and don’t give it another thought.
Napoleon Hill writes in his book, Outwitting The Devil, “The definition of Hell is to stand at death’s door and the man that you are meets the man that you could have become.” That potential is right there inside of you waiting for you to act in your best interest. 2019 is ready for you to invest in the most important community- The Community of YOU!
