I slashed the metal against the flint for what seemed like the ten millionth time. A single bead of sweat dripped down my nose and paused just long enough to catch a ray of sunshine before dropping onto my feeble pile. Spark, smoke, hope…. spark, smoke, hope….. for an hour now. I simply couldn’t tease a fire out of thin air. My hands were cramping from holding the flint and the tiny metal razor of my survival bracelet was cutting into my fingers.
Read MoreI’ve shared before the great affinity I have for my friend and co-worker, Jake Vandergriff, at Haka Fitness. He’s been pumping out some great blog posts that he calls his Wednesday Musings. I had to share this one with my readers! While it made me (literally) Laugh Out Loud, it also kind of lit a fire under my excuse-making ass. You can read more of Jake’s Musings on the Haka Blog.
Read MoreWe are getting close to Christmas..... like, reallllll close. It can be hard to know what to get for the active family, or the family that is trying to bump down the grasps of technology and do more outside. This is a short list of the Game Changers in our family, including for my nephews who are older than my kids. I'll keep adding as I think of stuff that has made a difference. So keep checking back!

Read More“I hate exercise, but I know I need to do it,” she said. “I just have never been able to stick with it.”
“Hey, no worries,” I replied. “You are definitely not alone. Maybe you should rethink exercise.”
It’s not the best sales pitch, especially since I have made the choice to own a gym and make a living (sort of) in the health and fitness industry. But I vowed long ago to give people truth, to empower people to find their journey in this whole mess. If you are struggling with your exercise gig, maybe it’s time to rethink exercise yourself.
Read MoreI often feel like I’ve lived ten lifetimes. I used to think this set me apart, that I was different than anyone else, that it was somehow unfair. I used to be very very angry about it.
Read MoreThe story inside my head says I’m not enough. The voice that talks to me says it’s never good enough. It’s never enough weight on the barbell or lean enough or fast enough. It’s never organized enough or brave enough or patient enough. It’s never disciplined enough or free enough or impulsive enough. It’s just never quite enough.
Read MoreI LOVE the Human Body with all of its mysteries and intricacies. New products and science are always coming down the pipe and it's hard to know what to read, where to spend your dollars, and when to focus your energy. I thought it would be helpful to show you just FIVE things I'm loving each month. Maybe a recipe, or a book, or an exercise or stretch..... Maybe a product, or a podcast, or a restaurant or venue. I'm giving you ONE THING in each of the areas of our Four Cornerstones or Health, plus a bonus. I hope you'll try them in your life and find a benefit for you!
Read MoreIt's not sexy and it's a terrible book title. It is, however, the answer to your constant on and off dieting. It’s the answer to healthy eating that sticks for the long term without being miserable. It’s the answer to 90% of the health issues that will eventually crush our economy.
Read MoreI fear connection. To really connect with someone is so personal. Yet, to give that connection is the ultimate gift. Connection is a personal investment and a selfless gift. The more you give, the more deeply invested you become, and the more you risk emotionally.
I found this in my car yesterday. and just stared at it….
Read MoreIt can be a bit difficult to transition from the over-scheduled, entertainment-filled expectations of the outside world to the setting of Nature School. Often times, we struggle with the desire to fill every second and keep kids on the move. We wrestle with the ability to give kids responsibility and then back off and let them do their thing. We fear the problems they will encounter and the big feelings they might have to feel. This is a disservice to our young people!

Read MoreThis is a new FAVORITE!! I made this last week when I was invited to a Middle Eastern Feast. I had no idea what to bring, like not a clue. So I reviewed a few recipes and this is the resulting recipe. It is so delicious and the warm flavors would pair so good with a winter squash soup or the Stuffed Acorn Squash.
